In 1933, Harry Beck redesigned the London Underground map. Instead of preserving geography, he redesigned it around how people actually navigated the system. The result became one of the most influential examples of information design ever created. Beck understood that people don't need a perfect representation of complexity. They just need a system that helps them accomplish what they came to do.
